By Editor  The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) says it mobilised more than 3,500 volunteers across 20 local government areas in Kano State to support the just-concluded measles and rubella vaccination campaign. The Secretary-General of the NRCS, Mr. Abubakar Kande, stated this in Kano while reviewing the exercise, which lasted for ten days. Kande said the campaign was part of efforts to complement the Federal Government’s initiative to eliminate vaccine-preventable diseases in the country. “As we are aware, Nigeria is still battling with vaccine-preventable diseases. We are working together with the government to ensure that all children under five years are protected against these diseases,” he said. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), has organised a high-level training for security agencies and government officials in Kano to strengthen human rights and humanitarian responses in the North-West region. The two-day training, held from Oct. 22 to 23, focused on integrating human rights principles into the operations of agencies working with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), refugees, asylum seekers and returnees. The Shura Council says it has commenced arrangements to summon Sheikh Lawan Abubakar Truimp to appear before its committee over allegations of blasphemy currently under investigation. The Secretary of the Committee, Shehu Wada Sagagi, made this known during a press briefing on Sunday in Kano. Sagagi said the Council was carrying out a detailed investigation into the alleged blasphemous statements attributed to the cleric. He explained that after the preliminary investigation, Sheikh Truimp would be officially invited to present his defence before the committee. “The Shura Council is working diligently to ensure justice is done. We are committed to giving all parties involved a fair and impartial hearing,” he said.
